About RLO Custom Leather

RLO began with handmade knife sheaths and grew into a made-to-order leather shop producing rifle slings, stock covers, cheek risers, no-drill harness systems, ammo carriers, scabbards, lever wraps, and related field gear.

Where RLO Started

From knife sheaths to custom firearm leather.

Rick Lowe's leatherwork began with sheaths made for his own custom knives.

During the economic downturn, that personal work became a way to support his family. Rick began producing sheaths for established knife makers, primarily Andy Roy of Fiddleback Forge, and the work developed into a full-time leather business.

Around the same period, a local company asked Rick to design leather rifle accessories for Mosin Nagant, Mauser, and SKS platforms. That work led to RLO rifle stock covers with pockets, ammunition loops, and cheek-rest configurations.

How the Work Developed

One leather project led to the next.

RLO's firearm products grew out of specific projects and customer requests rather than beginning as a mass-produced product line.

The Beginning

Custom Knife Sheaths

Rick first worked leather to make sheaths for knives from his own collection and knife-making work.

Full-Time Leatherwork

Fiddleback Forge Customers

Sheath work for Andy Roy and other knife-making customers helped turn leatherwork into a full-time business.

Firearm Leather

Stock Covers & Cheek Rests

Requests for Mosin Nagant, Mauser, and SKS accessories led to rifle stock covers with practical leather configurations.

A New Sling Design

The No-Drill Harness

A request for a Henry rifle sling that did not require drilling became the basis for RLO's no-drill harnessed sling system.

The No-Drill Story

A customer wanted a sling without drilling his Henry.

Griffin Wait asked Rick whether he could make a sling for his Henry rifle without drilling into the wooden stock.

Using Griffin's rifle as the pattern, Rick developed the harnessed attachment concept that became RLO's No-Drill Harnessed Sling. The design later expanded to applications for Henry, Winchester, Marlin, and other lever-action rifles.

The goal was straightforward. Create a practical leather sling attachment for rifles without requiring permanent modification to the wooden stock.
